Easy access to affordable credit and linkage to markets are the backbone of thriving small businesses. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector is a vital pillar of the country's economy. It contributes over 30 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employs more than 80 per cent of the total workforce. The Economic Survey 2025 notes that some 17.4 million people were employed by the sector in 2024, with the number having risen from 14 million in 2020.Most of these people engage in small businesses, which range from roadside vendors, small-scale manufacturers, service providers, agribusinesses and tech startups.
